The story behind it
01/01/2012
"Cesária, cretcheu", 2004.
I am going to photograph in the center of Mindelo, for the morning. That was the objective - to photograph. I am taking several film rolls and 2 cameras. "Photographing" includes linking with the people. Being there, with no hurries. To communicate. Feel. Laugh. Smile. See. After the market, I follow the sea shore. I get to this boat with the name "Cesária"! Magical. I knew that, some day, I'd publish this photograph. Here it is. For you Cesária, in the form of the project "Cesária, cretcheu".

Technical issues

This photograph results from scanning 35m Kodachrome VS slide film. I used the Hasselblad XPAN and the magnificent 30mm lens. For the greatest depth-of-field, I focused at the hyperfocal distance. I don't remember, but I might have reasonably closed the diaphragm. No tripod, since light was plenty.

Critial review
01/01/2012
This photograph has a special composition. There is the name "Cesária" as the puntum. There is Mount Cara (Face) in the background, as if personifying the singer. Both are symbols of Mindelo. Then, in a group of diagonals, the boats and mainly the one in the right's bow (quite destroyed!) have enough power to invade one's views. The boat is as if bigger than the hill at the back and the boat "Cesária". To its right there is a bit of the industrial context of the port. The world of the immaterial, of the symbols, of the abandoned and sunk boats, is separated from the real, metallic and material world.
Where you should place it
01/01/2012
In a house where Cape Verde is felt and heard. In the living-room of someone that enjoys travelling and music. Of someone that understands this fight between the immaterial, symbolic and eternal, and the material, temporary and fugacious. On the largest white free wall!
