Calibrate Your Monitor
To correctly see photographs on the web, you should have your screen calibrated. In practice, this means that your screen will be presenting the right luminosity and colours. Though the complete calibration does depend on environmental lighting, it helps approximate the best parameters.

- for simple calibration, I recommend the advice given at dpreview.com: you should be able to see the difference between  X,Y and Z and at best among A,B and C, in the figure below(taken from dpreview.com):
