The story behind it

"Before the Sun"
I am with a friend, photographing in a corner of the forest. After photographing in a small water line, in the shade, we climb in the direction of the Sun, towards the South. On the top, the Sun rays begin to shine.
Under the crowns of the beech trees, golden yellow, the ice changes into candid water drops, shining through the Sun. It is cold. Very cold. Then, on a clearing where the Sun hadn't yet been that morning, the frost was tremendous.

Technical issues

I am using my Nikon D700, with my 24mm prime f/2.8. The time of day, with the Sun reasonably weak, allows me to make the photograph without any ND grad filter. The white of the ice crystals also provide some stops nearer those in the trees. I exposure for 1/90 seconds, f/8, with ISO at 400, and use a tripod. The aperture anyhow allows for some unfocused background, in the trees.
The RAW file allows solid tweaks in contrast, detail and blacks. All detail and colours, as if I was still there.

Critial review

I'd say this is a classical landscape photograph, following the composition close to the rule of thirds. Is makes use of the wide-angle distortion of the 24mm, visually magnifying the bush, stalks and leaves at the foreground. This helps in providing a sense of perspective.
The great attraction in this photograph is in the high contrast between the icy area, white and bluish, indirectly lit, and the leafy part, golden and warm, with direct light. There is a unique game in colour, light and temperature.

Where you should place it
01/11/2012
The size of this photograph is 23cm x 35cm, at 300ppi. Nevertheless, for it image quality (camera, lens and focusing), it will accept upsampling and a quality print up to 50cm x 33cm, to still be admired closely. I suggest a Baryté Fine-Art or Photo Glossy paper.
Well lit, as always, it will shine in the place where it is hung. Printed large, it will be admired and will have various new details being discovered with time.
