The story behind it
01/10/2010
There are black hillsides, due to pumice stone. The background is red, of the dry soil. Ahead of me I have a black cone, of an ancient volcano. The road is a red line in the black cover. Approaching my own scale, I see proof of ponds, already dried out. Further reducing my analytical sight to the scale of the textures in the dried mud, I  discover life. This is life that was kept dormant in seeds that waited for water. Life sprouts, as if in a miracle, from  where it seemed to be nothing. It breaks out. Emerging. Growing. Exploding.
Technical issues
01/10/2010
Taken using slide film, it hasn't required any particular technical care. There were no complex issues in dealing with light, composition or focus. No tripod. The large apperture results in some unfocused areas in the grass, having focused on the mud plane. There is a bit of vignetting, visible in the corners.
Critial review
01/10/2010
This is a photograph of textures, where the shapes and the contrasts between the blacks, reds and greens set the rhythm. The slight unfocusing of the closest grass shoots provides a sense of volume, though the stage is almost plane. The several sizes of cracks also convey volume. It carries a set of meanings with it, crossing through Life and Death, water and drought. The vignetting helps in concentrating in the middle of the rectangle. In the core of the issue.
Where you should place it
01/10/2010
This one asks for a large print, since it actually may deliver such (due to the use of slide film). Or an exceptional print in a book, either on the cover or inside. It fits in a context where the meaning of things is important, beyond the aesthetics only. If in a public place, I'd advise something calm. But, whatever situation, with low and localised lighting.
