The story behind it
01/09/2009
I am in a farm, semi-abandoned. Along with friends, we went there for a stroll in the Park kind of thing. The public road that leads to it goes through the housing area. On one side you have the classy owner's buildings. On the opposite there are the workers' houses. There is a nostalgic feel in the air, about a rich and prosper past. Voices and noises would have then filled the air. Now you hear the brisk noise of leaves and grass, in the wind. There are interesting details, showing many ways of work, among different generations. Old walls mixed with modern bricks; windows have new glass mixed with the old. Several battles against ruin. Have to go back.
Technical issues

I used a DSLR, the Nikon D200, with the simple but very handy Sigma 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 Aspherical Macro HF lens. It is not a 5* lens but I've found it to be very light and good for travel. I took this picture handheld, slightly from under the window's axis at f/5.6, 1/125s, ISO 100. Plain and simple. The received light was indirect, and diffused, reflected from a bright ground and opposite buildings, during a sunny day. In post-processing, contrast and curves were adjusted, as well as added bit of perspective transformation.
Critial review

It is tremendously rich in textures, due to the diverse materials and geometries, in one simple window. The richness of the photograph comes from 5 layers of materials: stone, wood, glass, aluminium wave sheet and inner blinds. Some are flat, others waved or in lines. The distribution of painted glass breaks with the fundamental geometry. It adds a History component to it, mixed within the sheer usefulness of the window. It provided uniqueness to the object. The reflections of the ground and sky on the wave sheet have complementary colours.
For exceptional photographic quality in a large print, the film medium format version is best.

Where you should place it

On a large wall, with no windows - why not? You won't need to resort to architects, civil engineers, licensing, building work and cleaning!
The shine that the photograph itself has, if in front of other windows with natural lighting, will provide brightness as if it were a real window.
In the night, you will need simple and indirect lighting for it to shine. Your room will also shine!
