The story behind it
01/08/2011
I am preparing the outings for the CAUSES Workshop in the Lands of Alentejo (during the grape-picking and other stuff!). This is always a process of discovery of new areas, new tracks, new people and new spectacular landscapes. Besides the doubly attentive observation, for finding the best places to pay a visit during the Workshop, there is the worry for the careful planning. It is in one of these occasions that I discover an old country house, with the magnificent indigo blue in its walls.
Technical issues

I used a DSLR with my 24mm lens at f/8, to maximise focus in the details on every plane, contours and textures. Even with the focal distance of 24mm, the proximity of the ground-stones-thistle-wall group nearly resulted in a single plane photograph. With ISO at 400 and exposure of 1/350s, I needed no tripod. No filters and post-processing was very light. It was executed to enhance the contours, detail and contrast.
Critial review

This is a photograph of simplicity, joining composition with textures and complementary colours. The visual attention is drawn to the yellow thistle flower. Then it follows to the plant and scattered stones. In the background you have three components, with totally differing textures - the white wall, the indigo stripe and the brwon floor. The indigo stripe cuts through the organics of the rest, through its horiontal lines and colour complementarity with the yellow colours. On the whole, the photograph shows life in the mid of a harsh and tough history.
Where you should place it

The print of this photograph is just wonderful (I've printed and delivered it to a customer). It is its detail and the colours it has. At best quality and no up-sampling, it allows a print of 29cm x 44cm. But I'd say that its execution quality accepts some good up-sampling for something larger. I definitely prefer is with a passpartout and a wooden frame.
