August 2010
The story behind it
01/08/2010
In the vineyard, at sunset around 8pm. This is during the CAUSAS Photography Workshop last year, at the Lands of Alto Alentejo, in August, at the end of the session. Among laughter, satisfaction and the late fresh air of the day, he had photographed a lot. Truly, on these occasions I keep from making photographs other than of the participants (for the workshop's Making Of coverage). I do not have many chances to concentrate on other photos, being attentive to participants, helping and guiding them. This photograph is an exception, maybe because we were just finishing the day. Me too, I was satisfied with the day, the good vibes among all and the excellent light!
Technical issues

The thing is on use of the lens and of the flash. I used the Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D, at focal distance of 200mm, open at f2.8. The ISO at 200 resulted in an exposure of 1/320s, avoiding shakes (especially with such lens, at 200mm, and no tripod). I used the in-built flash, which is very good in the Nikon D700. In manual mode, I compensated the flash 2EV  stops under, to subtly light the leaves. Anyhow, I purposely focused between the leaves and infinity (where the Sun is). The large aperture gave me differing bokehs, between the leaves and the Sun. The combination of bokeh with the flash resulted in a unique lighting of the contours, in the leaves.
Critial review

Combining and working the light with lens, playing with lighting and focusing, resulted in a very captivating photograph. The background sky, almost monotone and creamy, has a large weight in the composition, while mixing with the yellow and red colours in the Sun. This mix is "unfocused". The other dominating colour, the green, takes part in the remaining half of the photograph. This is the shady part, where details are also unclear. The whole of the photograph is as if "undisclosed", not revealing everything. It is defined by the combination of light, contrasts and composition, breaking all rules. It ended up in a very expressive photograph.
Where you should place it

This photograph goes very well either in a small or large print. I suggest it framed with a light brown passpartout, wooden brown frame (thin or not, depending on proportions). It may be hung on a shady wall, and it will "shine" with localised lighting. I more easily see it in a place of private use, maybe for the expression of tranquillity, sense of being "undisclosed" and the idea of the end of the day, in comfort. I don't see it in a working place, but...it depends on the work!
