The story behind it
01/08/2008
Spring. The magentas of the Northern Alentejo invade large fields. I had driven through this place the day before. It was part of the objective, photographing on film at the right time and the right place. After a day's of other work, it was 6pm. I got my equipment and drove back to the place. I parked. The cows find it weird and move. The drivers in the other cars pass by, looking at me. They would understand why I carry the field bag and tripod, on the fields. There is time and tranquillity for a lot of photography. The temperature is just nice. The peace of the trees receives the final light of the day, and my presence. I photograph and create.
Technical issues
01/08/2008
This photograph has been taken with an analog camera, Fuji Velvia 50, colour professional slide film. It was converted for black & white, on post-processing. It maintains the reduced grain that the Velvia provides. The actual colours are the magentas, the greens and blues but the blacks occupy the main focus of attention. Exposure was set for the sky or the coppice of the tree on the left. This resulted on the silhouette of the other tree, closer and in the shade. All content is focused, due to the small aperture and use of the tripod.
Critial review

Simplicity, texture and dynamics.   The conversion to black & white concentrates attention in these aspects. The sky is nearly white, as a void. The lines of the trees provide and link three planes. The tree on the right seems to appear from the black shadow. The other tree is at the horizon, farther away. The deep shadow is dark and uniform, in the mid of the rich texture of the grass - the third plane. The film provides detail and texture richness that the digital still struggles to get. Especially if one intends to make a quality large print.
Where you should place it

This photograph, printed large, e.g., 60cm wide at least or on a full wall width, goes well in a living room with strong colours. It is simple enough not to go against a more dense decoration.  It does not require a too a demanding illumination. This is also because it is in black & white.
Also due to these aspects, it will provide a bit of a rural touch to the house, maintaining modernity and sophistication.
It will also fit a restaurant or a café with the same attributes. Why not?
