The story behind it
01/07/2011
We leave the centre of town (Brussels) on tram. It takes us through streets and then through the forest. It seems unthinkable, but the tram-confined-urbanity flows through deep shadows of beech and oak. The light turns green, as if in a tunnel of Nature. We arrive and follow the maps. Tulips are wide open and so are the smiling faces of many people. In the park. Again!!
Technical issues

This 1x1 photograph results from stitching two horizontal together. I used a 50mm lens, at f/1.8, to reduce the depth-of-field. My aim was to focus only on the wooden teeth and their reflections, blurring the bottom grass part and the waves in the infinite. The result is a photograph printable at 240dpi, with 45cm x 45cm (without resampling). I chose to convert it to B&W, since it is the shapes, reflections and fluid surfaces that make it.
Critial review

The composition with the wood pieces at its centre is broken only by the grass at the bottom part. This unfocused plane does not detract attention from the main visual point, helping in providing visual depth. Cropping this plane out would result in placing the punctum off-centre or reducing the size of the photograph. The visual depth would be sacrificed in the distance, where the water is also unfocused. The fluid and continuous reflections of the wood in the water make part of the punctum. It transmits a sense of fluidity in space and time.
Where you should place it

This is a tranquility-providing photograph. I'd see it on a place where calm is important. Due to its minimalist side, I'd more easily see it in a modern minimalist setting. It would go very well hung on a bare concrete wall, with a thin frame.
