The story behind it

"Party time"
It is Spring and I am off photographing the colours. I am in the mountains of Gerês, in the north of Portugal. Is am there for a photography commission, but have time for looking and walking around in the mountains.
The temperatures are cool and the long rain of the previous months has painted the hills in green, purple and yellow.
But, incredible as it may seem, it is just besides the car park that I find the very best of colours. Virtually no effort, and it just appeared in front of my eyes.
Shoot and listen to the bees. It is their party time!

Technical issues

This was an easy one, with 9h30 a.m. morning light, demanding for careful composition and focusing. I've opened the diaphragm to its maximum, f2.8 for the Nikon 24mm lens I used, on a full-frame DSLR. Most of my effort was on finding the best composition, framing the buzzing yellow of the gorse with the relaxing purple colour of the heather. I had to simplify, showing a bit of the forest, but centring attention on the colour contrasts. I got low, ground level, cutting most of the landscape out.
Critial review

Simple, colourful and yet not classical. The game of playing with the depth-of-field makes us firstly drive our eyes to the focused heather bush, at the forefront. Then the eyes follow to the powerful yellow flowers at the back, in a wonderful bokeh of small yellow circles. This is a photograph that pictures the beauty of the Portuguese rural and mountain landscape, in a subtle but inspiring way.
This is an artistic photograph, with no editing other than contrast or colours.

Where you should place it

With its native size of 24cm x 36cm at 300ppi, it handles very good upsampling and high quality larger prints. As in other cases, I suggest a dark grey or a white creamy passpartout. I can imagine a thick and dark wooden frame, with or without passpartout.
If you like flowers, then this will provide some flowers on a well lit wall. Your room, office or your house will transmit more joy with such a printed photograph.
