The story behind it
01/06/2008
Newcastle. The architecture lines of the new building and bridge structures, along with the old city, provide exceptional contrast. It is cold and for many days we can't see any sun. Rain. We drive from the middle of England to the north. It brings memories of Yorkshire back, with the ever-equal moors. It's where the Famous Five has their adventures. Where Arthur Conan Doyle's Hound of the Baskervilles put Sherlock Holmes and his friend thinking. There is no mystery here, but beauty and marvelous technique, in the Newcastle Concert Hall, the Millennium Bridge and the Modern Art Gallery.
Technical issues

This photograph has been taken with the analog camera, with Kodak TMAX400 B&W negative film. It is known for its contrast between whites and blacks. For its large ISO, no tripod was needed. The resulting heavy grain provides interesting volume. The 85mm lens was sufficiently long to limit attention to the details on the building's ceiling, making the photo flat and with no sense of perspective.
Critial review

The lines and curves, interceptions and crossings, with the different textures and luminosities, provide this photograph with great balance and beauty, in its simplicity. The high grain together with the shadows and whites provide great content. The rule of thirds is followed. The line coming from the bottom right corner does its work, giving dynamics. More attentively, the shadows of the pillar on one of the reflectors are repeated, helping to imagine several light sources, hidden behind the structure. The milky feel of the bottom wall is just awesome!
Is has a touch of sea, waves, sails and flags.

Where you should place it

This photograph doesn't require too a strong a lighting. It's a B&W with not too many small details. The grain, the lines and the textures are THE photograph, are ITS volume. It will fit particularly well a minimalistic decorated place. At this moment, writing this, I am imagining it on a red coloured wall. But maybe this is because I have just sold another B&W for a red wall!
This photograph is stunning, printed large, with a narrow dark wooden frame and a light brown passpartout.
