The story behind it
01/05/2012
No inspirational will, after the sad news.
I don’t have it and don’t want it, beyond my breathing blues.
I don’t seek it and don’t want to see it, on an image of skill.
Of the tragic fall remains protest, the magical loss one’s arrest.
For a photograph, he wrote on rock his final score.
On a breath of wind, flew a last note it bore.

Personal note on Bernardo Sassetti's death. Pianist, composer and photographer. A genius of my generation.
Technical issues

It results from stitching several vertical photographs, taken with DSLR. Prime 50mm lens at f/1.8, 1/90s, ISO at 200. In RAW, then converted to B&W. Has the size of a print of 50cm x 50cm, with no upsampling.
The depth of field is very short, focusing almost only on the 5 beech leaves on the trunk, and on some wild garlic. Slight adjustments in contrast and light, mainly on the 5 leaves.

Critial review

For its simplicity, punctum and studium, this photograph can take us to a multitude of metaphoric interpretations. The B&W helps in this construction, brought upon the short depth-of-field and by the selective focusing on the 5 beech leaves. My interpretation is the following: the 5 beech leaves are an allusion to piano; the trunk is the detachment above the mundane reality and the present; the wild garlic are our lives, that beautifully and diversely carry on; in the background, on the upper-left corner, another trunk arises.
Where you should place it

In your living room, printed large, at 50cm x 50cm minimum. In my opinion, it will go well with a passpartout, light brown or nearly white. It has the quality for larger prints, with no problem.
A light spot, surely.
