April 2008
The story behind it
01/04/2008
Coimbra, at the park on the banks of Mondego. The Sun goes down low and the afternoon wind goes up the River Mondego, as usual. People cross the bridges, go along the pavements. Kids and adults, slow or fast, in silence or talking, yelling or laughing. You hear the waves break on the shores and the young small poplar leaves shaking in the wind. It is Spring. The new gardens blossom. The Lavender flowers (Lavandula stoechas)...in the afternoon wind that "goes up the River Mondego, as usual". It shone and waved in the Spring wind, "slow or fast, in silence or talking, yelling or laughing", with the people. Good Spring times!
Technical issues
01/04/2008
This photograph was taken with digital camera, macro lens. The long exposure is deliberate, at 1/4 sec., to include the idea of wind into the little and simple 2D rectangle that is a photograph. The ISO at 100 provides virtually no noise. The aperture at f/32 was used to provide the same (in)definitions along the whole photo (dragged other than unfocused). Due to the long exposure, the original photo results more dull that normal, having recovered the true colours and contrast, using post-processing. The light goes through the upper petals, making them luminous. Care was taken to avoid flare, with the Sun nearly in the axis of the lens. Vigneting was added, at post-processing. No straight photography here, but no "cheating"!
Critial review
01/04/2008
This is an abstract photograph, having been processed only to enhance the middle part, contrast and colour, as would be done in traditional photography art processing. The colours, those that would be captured with short exposure, movement and simplicity, it acquires beauty and presence. In spite of the scale, of something small, the details were sacrificed for dragging, indefinition, in the wind. It may be seen as a painting, but with brush stokes that have been performed in that moment with a lens, later in the processing.
Where you should place it
01/04/2008
This photograph goes well in a space with little direct light, with low-key lighting. If well lit, making light not overpass the limits of the canvas, the magentas and even the deep greens provided volume. It would fit in an entrance hall of a house or office, as long as well lit with artificial lighting. When coming in, immediately you would transmit a sense of comfort and tranquility.
