March 2009
The story behind it
01/03/2009
I walk alone in the mountain. Everything is calm. I had woken up at around 6h30, to get to the place I wanted, with the right light. I wanted to get the indirect and diffused morning light. The ground is still frozen, with the crystals around the edges of leaves. The streams are full of water. You hear its strength among the rocks, on each turn and round turn. It is cold, but I was prepared and protected. The moss and lichen are rich, showing much life waiting for Spring. I photograph calmly, choosing camera and lenses. I discover a different boulder, on top of the water surface. I get it on an unusual angle.
Technical issues

This was done with a DSLR, Nikon D700, at 100 ISO. The lens is a Nikon 24mm f/2.8, placed at f22. The exposure time was set to 6 seconds. The polarising filter helped to manage the reflections on the water, to see the bottom under the milky blurred water. Though I registered it in RAW, in colour, I chose to change it to B&W in post-processing, with a blue and a red filter. It results in great contrasts. The tripod was a must, with mirror-lock and cable release. I finally added some vigneting, in post-processing.
Critial review
01/03/2009
This is not a photograph whose object is clear, due to the textures at stake, the angle and the extraordinary simplicity captured. For this, as I see it, this is a photograph that gradually reveals its details. The large contrast between the blurred velvety water and the extraordinary detail of the moss, the leaves and the blackberry shoot, make the photograph captivating. The shape of the rock, as of a mountain under a weird sky, forms a triangle with much weight and presence. The blackberry shoot and the grass provide dynamics, braking through the staticity of the rock. B&W works perfect in this case.
Where you should place it

This is a photograph to be printed large. It must be well lit, on a dark area, with local and directed lighting. I suggest it to be placed without a frame. It goes well in a living room, on a wall with any colour. Preferably a wall with no texture. It also goes well in an office, where one used the light with the objective of welcoming your visits, for comfort, work, concentration, but also simplicity.
