"Island" or "A Miyazaki's castle in the sky" I've just slept in a comfortable forest hut, at Bussaco National Forest. The autumn morning smells of mushrooms, moss, wet and rotten leaves. The thick fog invades the lowlands, revealing small islands of higher hills and trees.
It is a good time for walking, free and respectful in the hills and in the forest. We had been photographing the night before and in the rain. The clear morning after good evening and morning meals, among friends and with clear air and bright light, was a morning to remember.
This photograph wat taken at ISO 400, 1/1500s and f/4.8. I used my 80-200mm f/2.8 lens, at 200mm with an added 2x teleconverter. Like this, I was able to limit the photograph to the fog area with the single "island". I used the tripod, in spite of the high shutter speed.
Post-processing was very little, with the usual contrast, levels adjustments and USM.
This is a simple photograph, being unique for its uncanny occasion and the consequent unusual record of a piece of land and trees soaring through the clouds. It follows a classical composition with the "island" in the bottom line of thirds.
The light is low, although already after the golden hour, helping to enhance the outlines of trees. This provides contrast with the fluidity and whiteness of the clouds.
